I have used the search function and to no avail. Would a 4 cylinders fuel pump work on a 6 cylinder and vice versa? I believe mine has gone gone out or my gas line froze recently (was like -4 last night in chicago) but im leaning more towards a fuel pump since i left over half a tank of gas in my truck.

front end pop and steering wheel shake
hi, i'm open to any and all suggestions as i am completely lost. on my '97 ranger a few days ago i had a loud pop. as the day go by it is happening more and more often. now a while back i had this same noise but it would repeatedly do it every time the wheel went around. i solved that by tightening up the wheel bearing nuts. this time it will only do it once or twice in a row. when it does it the right wheel will drag (not completely) but it's enough to pull the steering wheel to the right. the last time it pulled it to the right, stayed there for a couple seconds, popped twice and came free again. like i said any suggestions?

96 Ranger 2.3L M5OD Whines real loud in 3rd & 5th gears
My daily commute to work doubled back in January so I've really been racking up the Hwy miles on my lil truck.
It started about a week ago, shifting into both 3rd. & 5th. gears brought on a definite whine & rattle from the transmission, at times its rattling the gear shift so much that I have to keep my hand on the top of the gear shift to keep the noise inside the cab down.
Whatever the problem is its getting worse last night on the way home from work the whine from 5th. gear was louder than the engine & road noises.
It immediately stops whining if you take your foot off the gas, it only makes the whine while accelerating in 3rd & 5th gears, there are zero issues shifting gears, it does not whine at all with the clutch pedal depressed, but then again my foot is off the gas pedal when pushing in the clutch.
The clutch, pressure plate, throughout bearing & pilot bearing were replaced in 2010 about 70,000 mi ago, the bulk of those miles have been in the last 6 months.
Any ideas guys??

Headers
I have an exhaust leak I have been trying to fix forever.
It is the passenger side where the y-pipe meets the manifold.
I am thinking the manifold is no longer round where the y-pip seals it.
If I am going to replace it, I might as well upgrade.
Anyone have any input on the Stainless JBA shorty headers

Help with new tires and wheels.. 2wd 01' Ranger
I have a 2001 XLT single cab 2.3L ranger. My rear end is 4.10 gears. The previous owner put on Pirelli Scoripion ATR 235-75-15 on the stock chrome wheels which were 15". I like the look and gives the little ranger a little stanced look.
My tires need replacing now so I am looking at really just picking up some Michelin ltx m/s2 since I do only highway driving... I picked up 09' ranger sport 16" wheels a while ago and was wondering if this would be a problem.
I wanted to put on 245-70-16 tires. Looks like when using the chart online they are about less than 1" taller than what I currently have, actually about 15mm bigger diameter...
235/75-R15 vs 245/70-R16 Tire Comparison - Tire Size Calculator
Do you think that will be a problem with a 2001 ranger with coil springs or should I go with 235-70-16... which would be roughly the same height as I am currently running with the 15" wheels?
I attached some pictures of the truck, and the wheels. Then the new wheels that I have sitting here..
I have no plans on going off road, ever... Highway milage only really. This is my DD.
Thanks,,
-Nigel

Another spark plug question
I replaced three of my park plugs today. My truck has over 100,000 miles and I didn't know when they were changed last.
Anyhow, the plugs I pulled out were NGK TR55-1GP (in an American truck!?!?!). I replaced them with Motorcraft SP498 plugs. I also replaced the wires (Prestolite?) with Motorcraft wires.
My question is on the NGK plugs, there is a small brown burn mark on the insulator around the center electrode.

It's only one small spot on each plug, otherwise they look fine. What could that be?
I'll tackle the remaining plugs (passenger side) this weekend.

Hid Projector Help
So I made the mistake of buying a product without consulting the almighty forums first. I bought an HID kit and installed it. Tons of light, just not in the right places. The high beams are pretty decent, light seems somewhat focused and even. Low beams are all over the place with hot spots and cold spots seemingly everywhere. Now I realize I need projectors but from what I have read on here none of the aftermarket assemblies are worth a crap. So that leads me to making my own. So, I have read that mikerider makes them and so do a few other members. Could you guys pm me your prices and availability? I'm not sure where to start on my own. The kit I bought is a direct replacement for 9007 bulbs. Is that a good thing? Will they fit projectors? Do I need different bulbs? My kit is bi-xenon. Thanks in advance.

3.0 missfire please help
Hello my 2002 ford ranger 3.0 4x4 is missfireing bad on cylinder one but for the life of me I cannot figure it out all the plugs and wires are brand new the coil pack was changed about six months ago I don't seem seem to have a problem with the coil pack but I haven't checked it because it still grabs spark , I don't believe I have any vacuum leaks and I have also changed that injector and the fuel rail is in good shape but I still can't figure it out and at times it seems that the missfire disappears and comes back in a day or two but still in that time frame I don't have the power that it should be having if I would floor it, it would accelerate like if it would be quater way on the throttle any suggestions would be great it's just costing me so much on gas and I'm currently trying to build up the truck and its delaying me on everything

New Wheels, should I swap rotors?
Hey guys. For awhile i've been wanting to get slightly bigger wheels on my '89 Aerostar, as the 14" steelies that it came with don't leave me much option or availability for tires. I'm wanting to upgrade to some nice 15 or 16" aluminum wheels, and I spotted a set of wheels on a wrecked '05 Ranger at pick and pull the other day. If i were to install 1" or 2" bigger wheels than are mounted stock, would there be any issues with rubbing if i were to say install all terrain tires with meaty sidewalls? And furthermore would you suggest swapping out the stock rotors? I know it's good practice and I can probably grab them at the same time as the wheels, I'd just like to get some advice before i drop some money on wheels and tires.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Video of the day on the trail here:
The start of the day was another early run up the hill. The group left at 6:30am to make the trek to Carson City area. Weather was great and we made great time. Not many people up that early driving up the hill.

Two of the group were coming from the 80 side and meet up with us at the kick off point. We fueled up, aired down and hit the trail at 9:00am on the dot.

![]()
Made a quick stop to let the group catch up and also to get some video of them coming around the bend.
![]()
![]()
From there we made our way to the valley where most of the days trails were. Made a quick stop at the first of the planned poker run card check points to snap a pic.
![]()
The group trekked further south and then made the cut over to the trails that lead north. On this section we stopped to defend the group for the killer rocks in the area. It was a fierce battle but we were successful.
![]()
We had one issue on the trail where one of the guys bed cover became a cape. With a little creative engineering we were able to tie it down and it stayed in place the rest of the day. Though the jokes about him wanting to be super man did not stop till food. While waiting for the trail fix, was able to get a great terrain shot.

The group hit the trail north. As you can see it was fast and flat. Someone had to see where the limiter was.

This is where we had a, lets call it odd incident happen. In the middle of nowhere dirt road was a Chrysler minivan driving with doors open. They pulled over as the group approached so we could pass. As we passed we were all prepared to see a body being dumber but instead we saw a GIANT yellow rubber duck smashed in the windshield. Not sure what was going on but we are all getting a laugh out of it and glad it was not a mafia dump HAHA.
Shortly after this funny incident we hit some fun whoops that were hilarious for some reason. See the video for all the chuckling. Pic is right after the whoops.
![]()
The drive off the trail was fun and fast like the rest of the afternoon.
![]()
After we hit the pavement we made the 40 mile trek to food in Carson City. BBQ who could go wrong. After foot made the trek back home with a great sun set.

Get a trouble light code indicating that the thermostat is stuck in the open mode. Engine temp gauge indicates normal heat range, not running hot or cold. Is there a temp sensor that goes bad or is this a common issue. Truck sits quite a lot and only has 10k miles. Any guidance would be appreciated.

HID Hi/Low Question
I have DDM HID 35w 6000K non-high/low in my headlights and fogs. My dad just traded in his 2003 F-150 with the DDM HID 35w 6000K hi/low bulbs, so I grabbed them off his truck and put them in mine before he traded them in.
The DDM hi/low kit works by re-positioning the bulb so it is closer to the truck. When I turn on the high beam, the light output is horrible, it is more spread out and does not shine any further IMO.
Has anyone else experienced this with an HID kit? If I get projectors will the high beams work better by just re-positioning the bulb?
Not really sure how HID high beams work in the first place, or if re-positioning the bulb is a common method. I know stock bulb are dual filament, but im a noob to HID.
Thanks guys.

Hey guys,
So I just made this video which should be very helpful to many of us! Replacing the dash lights is not that bad of a job and it is just a little time consuming with all of the screws.
Let me know what you think!

Want to Buy: 1995 Ford Ranger Radio Bezel
I'm looking for a new radio bezel for my ranger. My current one doesn't stay put into the dash because of broken tabs. It's from a STX model 4x4 with fog lights. I tell you it's a pain to find one. Do you guys know if a radio bezel from an Explorer 4x4 would fit in the ranger? I understand that there might be a couple of buttons that wouldn't work, as they wouldn't be hooked up but I just need one that will stay in place. Thank you for your help.

The poker run trail game:

Objective: This is a simple 5-card stud game. Participants can stay in a group or if they want to do their own thing can drive ahead to the check points to pick up the next playing card. Check points are on marked city and county roads to make the easy to find. A flag will mark the check point. If you are faster than the check point teams you might have to weight as they are on surface streets to keep jumping ahead.
How to Play: At the start of the event, teams are given a packet with GPS locations (street addresses and times checkpoints are open). At each checkpoint teams will be able to choose their playing card.
Distance covered: The group will cover 186 mile from the start to the end of the trip. 124 of those miles are trail miles over some fast and fun terrain. There is a short section that is a little bumpy but you will NOT need 4X4 to do this run.
NOTES: This is not a time and distance rally or the fastest car wins event. This is a meant to be a fun trail event with a game added to it to make it different. Goal of the outing is to be fun and social not a race!
There is a restroom stop after the first check point or 1.5 miles into the trail for those of you who need a more civilized restroom. We encourage you to buy something at the bakery to keep them in business as well as they are very tasty.

Going from 14 to 15 inch wheels/tires
Each year the selection of tires available in P225/70R14 (14x6 rims) has gotten smaller. This is the size specified on my 1995 2wd Ranger. So I took the plunge and decided to go and order P225/70R15 tires on 15x7 rims. From reading the forum and such I know the gas mileage may go down but I do not drive far. What about clearance? Any other issues should be concerned about?
