Not familiar with the nuances of hydraulic clutch systems so I am looking for advice from the forum members. My son has a '84 Ranger, 4x2, 2.8L V6 with a 4 spd manual tranny. Just ready to turn over (original) 100K miles.
We've sorted out all motor issues, now he is starting to have some issues with shifting it into gears. Clutch seems to work properly as it disengages the engine from the rest of the drivetrain when pedal is depressed. However, going from neutral to any gear requires an excessive amount of force on the shifter. It is a real pain (grinds) to get it into reverse.
He can't afford much but can do all of the work himself with my supervision. I don't want to throw parts at it until he finds the problem. On a standard clutch system (not hydraulic) I would suspect either the throwout bearing being bad or the pressure plate fingers wearing out. Clutch does not slip when in gear even under heavy load (parking brake engaged and letting the clutch out in 3rd gear kills engine).
Could this be a problem with the hydraulic system instead? Clutch master cylinder reservoir is full and there is no sign of leakage anywhere. Suggestions? Thx in advance, ---rick
